QUARRY OVERVIEW
There is a clear link between population, the economy and growth, and demand for aggregate. As regions and economies grow, so too does demand for aggregate. New Zealand uses on average 8-10 tonnes of aggregate every year for each adult and child. Aggregate supply is therefore a critical component that is central in contributing to the communities needs and meeting the regions existing and future infrastructure requirements.
Smythes Quarry is an extensive greywacke aggregate resource which is located on State Highway 2, 9 km’s east of Maramarua and has been in operation since 1960.
Initially supplying the rural market with farm grade materials, the quarry now produces a wide range of high quality products including basecourses, concrete aggregate and sealing chip as well as rural products to meet the growing demands of consumers in the Auckland and Waikato regions.
With sales around 800,000 tonnes per annum, Smythes has been responsible for many infrastructure projects such as the Waterview Tunnel, Mangere Bridge Duplication, Victoria Park Tunnel and the Ara Tūhono – Pūhoi to Warkworth motorway to name a few.
The total aggregate resource as determined by the International JORC code standards is in excess of 650 million tonnes (250 million tonnes of measured resource and 400 million tonnes of indicated resource). This will enable Smythes Quarry to meet the supply and demands for aggregate products in the Auckland and Waikato regions well into the future.
